In one to three day old chicks, feather sexing can be done according to the length of certain feathers on the wing, but at 6 weeks, you will have more luck with things like personality and comb size and color--roos more often have a larger, redder comb than hens do.

I will check out your site, thanks. I don't have the chicks yet. I am going to pick up around 40 tonight (only want a few roosters) from a guy that has well over 100. These are straight run, so I would like to pick out as many hens as possible.

I got 48 chicks on Friday. The next morning I went into the coop, and most of them were sparring. Does this mean I have a bunch of cockerels on my hands, or do pullets do this too? I don't remember this behavior last year when I got my pullets. Is this just pecking order stuff or ROOSTERS?!

Rest assure pullets do that also, I do think you should prepare yourself for at least a 50-50 mix though. Sexing chicks is tricky, I thought I was sure of two orp. chicks that I hatched last spring..... I got it 100% wrong! it's better to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
