fertilizing hay fields

I read or heard somewhere that if you fertilize your hay fields too close to when you are havesting the hay, that the horses won't eat the hay because it has a bad smell to it (from the fertilizer). Does anyone know about this?

And how often do you fertilize your hay fields. Ours hasn't been done in probably 20 years! But we still get a pretty good lst crop off it.

I would put out fertilizer now also some grazon as well. I am doing the same to mine right now. I have dandelions popping up and the grazon takes care of the weeds and the fertilizer will make a huge difference with your yield.
