Heavy losses in the laying dept.

So the neighbourhood fox has finally wiped out most of my chickens over the weekend. I have Earl my roo and three hens left. (I lost 6 hens)

On the plus side, the fox weeded out whoever had been eating eggs as well as whoever was laying the mishapen eggs with paper thin shells.

Now I have 12 eggs in an incubator at a friends house and another 12 in an incubator here. Hopefully they are not all roosters when they hatch!

In the meantime, my egg customers are sad they have to go back to store bought eggs for the next 6 months.

Maybe you can find a big egg laying operation and buy some laying hens from them. they usually discard the hens at 18 months and you can use them longer than that. Just be careful on diseases and mites etc. probably not worth the risk.

I candled all my eggs last night, looks like 12 out of 12 are growing, YAY! I'm going to use this quiet time with only 4 chickens to expand the coop and run.
