barley rust and chicken feed

My first crop of barley has rust, according to a knowledgable friend. It's a roughly 12x15' patch. My intention was to harvest the barley for winter feed and the straw for bedding. But since the barley started ripening I've been encouraging the chickens to go in there and graze to see if they would eat it. They love the seed heads. Should I be worried about them eating it since it's gone rusty? The seed came from the farmers co-op and was sold as livestock feed; is that why it wasn't rust-resistant? I have a lot to learn about growing grains....
