What's native in your area?? Water maple (silver maple?) grows like a weed and can be cut off when the sap is down if they get too tall. Hazelnut is common here. Pretty tasty and can be cut back. Makes tough walking sticks and tool handles too.

I've heard that Siberian Pea Shrub can be used for chickens, and reindeer. I don't know if cattle would eat the pods. It gets about 10' to 15' tall.

I've heard that honeylocust pods are a good protein rich forage for cattle. They may get too tall for what you are looking for, but they are low maintenance. They do have nasty thorns though you may be able to find a variety the produces fruit without the thorns. Check out www.oikostreecrops.com for more information.

I'd add to make sure you don't plant anything toxic to your animals, as well. Look up your possibilities online and check to make sure all parts are edible.
