Ivermec & heartworms

My Lab was diagnosed with heartworms last week. She is a stray that showed up 14 months ago. She was checked for heartworms, negative, and put on preventive. A year later, she tested positive. The Vet said she probably had them when she came but not long enough for her to test positive. She has no signs of having them. i.e.: She runs and swims with no shortness of breath, no coughing, etc. She is about 3 years old.

She has been on heartworm preventive for the last 11 months so she shouldn't have any new adult worms. I have never missed giving her the meds.

Thanks for your help.

My question: Can I start her on the Ivermec method of controlling the microflairia and let the adults die of old age? They only live about 1.5-2 years, according to the Vet. If she hasn't been reinfected during the time she's been with me, the worms should be reaching the 1.5 year mark now.

If at some point during the 1.5-2 years, she starts to show signs, can take her in for the treatment???
