Ice melting products and chickens

Does anyone know if the calcium chloride or rock salt is safe to use around where chickens might be? I really need to use something around the doors to the coop as we have had quite a bit of sleet and then thawing and freezing. I just need to be sure what is safe and what is not.

Something to worry about is grains of salt staying high and dry and being eaten, if you can use a liquid solution that is ideal.

Do you have to actually melt the ice? Can you chip it away and use sand for traction? I would be very cautious using salt products around hens -- they're so curious with their beaks!

Johanna, they won't be able to get at it. I need to keep the ground soft at the entrance door. There is that white stuff called calcium chloride I wonder if that is safer than rock salt.

Next year I am going to have to find a new design for my coop and run. I have this problem every winter.

Just for my information why exactly is salt bad for chickens? I know it is but why?
