Frugal fake EarthBoxes

I am so excited! I have a new project!

While doing a little googling I found a page detailing how the author made self-watering containers (a la EarthBoxes) using two 5-gallon buckets, some tubing and plastic cups (like Solo brand). The best part is that he follows up his directions with a review after the growing season. They were quite successful!

Through one of my co-workers and Freecycle, I got 12 5-gallon buckets for free. Throw in some 1-inch PVC and plastic cups (which are both pretty cheap) and I'm in business.

I have a few EarthBoxes, but they are not cheap and the shipping is ridiculous. This is just what the doctor ordered to get me through to spring. Yeah!

I found a really great guide to making self watering containers( link at bottom of page.)
I'm planning on making some of these myself. Hope that helps.

questions!

I love the idea but I have a couple of questions:

First we have major mosquito problems here. . do you think that the water reservoir will be a haven for larva? Perhaps one of those mosquito pellets?

The other thing that concerns me is the cost of all the potting soil. Anyone have a really frugal way to fill the containers?

Thanks!

Annette

We don't have what I'd call a mosquito problem here, so you'll have to take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but I have 3 "real" EarthBoxes and have never had a problem with mosquitoes/larvae with them. Perhaps because the reservoir is mostly covered (just the overflow hole and the tube you pour the water down)?

I don't know what is in those mosquito pellets. Would it be safe for the plants?

I've seen the plans for the EarthBoxes made of storage boxes, but I was glad to find plans using something I could get for free rather than have to go out and buy storage boxes. :)
