reusing metal fence/gate

i'd like to put up a fence and driveway gate in my front yard but after looking at the price of new ($$$$), i'm hoping it may be more cost effective to buy used and repurpose it to fit my space.

how labor intensive might it be to repurpose a fence panel into a gate/door? i'm hoping if the fence poles are intact (not sawed off) the panels will be reusable?

has anyone reused used metal fence panels? trying to figure out if i'm creating a bigger headache trying to go the frugal way.

RE: reusing metal fence/gate

Lila,

I volunteer at Habitat Restore. We are always getting in iron gates and panels. The driveway gates seem to be standard sizes and usually include the posts which are also metal. If you are doing this yourself, it does take some thinking on the design side and parts required. Any time repurposed items are used there will be a few hitches involved to get them right. Driveway gates are so big and heavy, mounting correctly is really important. Someone must be getting it right though as these gates never stay for sale very long.

Last summer I put up an iron fence with a metal arbor in my front yard using old fencing from Restore. Used standard wood posts cemented in ground and attached the fence panels in between. Painted all black and added copper post toppers (new). Neighbors loved it and continue to get great comments. Maybe they like it because it isn't the norm of white pickets or rail fencing.
