What to do with Starbucks bags?

The silver ones that used grounds come in... I'm collecting them by the dozens and hate to add them to the landfill. Any creative ideas on what else I can use them for, outdoors or in?

Funny you should mention it! On the Soil, Compost, & Mulch Forum, someone posted the same dilemma. Best idea so far seems to be using them as flower pots. Make drainage holes in the bottom, plant cuttings or seeds, & later on you can carry plants in them to swaps & so forth.

I also have bunches of these bags from using their coffee grounds for compost. If you over-winter bulbs after lifting them in the fall, these bags are perfect for storage. I poke ventilation holes in the bags, fill with bulbs stored in peat moss, fold the tops down and staple closed. Same principle for lifting plants in the fall and overwintering in the garage...drainage holes in the bottom, plant in the bag, and many bagged plants in no-hole flats. This way, you can water the plants as needed and the flats act as a catch-all drainage saucer. These two uses of the bags work great for me.

Just wanted to ask a question, Does Starbucks REALLY just give away there used Coffee grounds? I have heard of such but been a little shy to actually ask. Darren |

Darren...Starbucks here in Atlanta gives them away. Just inside the door at "my" Starbucks is a metal bin with bags of used coffee grounds in them. All you have to do is help yourself! On the few occasions when the bin was empty, I asked at the counter and they were very willing to fill a bag for me. So be bold and ASK. Victoria

Does any one use the plastic cups to start seeds in? They are quite tall and think they would be perfect for WS seeds.

Cactus--Yes, ALL Starbucks give away their grounds. It's company policy. Also ingenious; saving money on waste removal and getting good PR to boot.

I open the bags, put them down on the asphalt, & put my soil on it. The heat burns out fungi or pests that may be in the soil & the bags contain the soil. Starbucks is usually pretty good about giving the grounds away, but I have a couple of outlets refuse to do so. One outlet would not do it if you were not buying something, & the other simply did not recycle.
