Water spikes

Greetings, I posted this question on the MN site then I thought a frugal gardener would certainly have a solution for me. I want to use my rainbarrel water for deep-root watering of my plants. There are commercial spikes available that screw onto a plastic pop bottle or milk jug that allow for root watering without soil erosion. They are pretty pricey(especially for this very frugal gardener)!! I was thinking of making some using a small diameter PVC pipe and some fittings to come up with a homemade version. Has anyone tried making some or have any suggestions??? Thanks, Cleo

I saw them too and I totally agree with you. For such a simple plastic item they sure want a few bucks. There has GOT to be a way to 'McGyver' (anyone remember that show?)them. I will be checking back for this one myself. They DO look like a great item.

Not the same difference, but if you fill a plastic bottle with water...put the cap back on...punch a small hole in the bottom of the bottle, the water will slowly seep out and deeply water your plant. The tightness of the cap will determine how fast or slow the water seeps out.

You could use PVC and construction sites have it laying around but need to ask. Get the rubber tips used on furniture legs to cover the end - you dont't want the dirt to plug up the end when you push into the ground. Drill holes in the PVC using both reverse and forward to make it a clean hole.
This way the top of the pipe would be above ground where you could water.

During the winter months, I switch to buying my drinking or distilled water to the 2 1/2 gallon containers. For my tomatoes, I use 6 to 12 inch lengths of drip line hose (small diameter available at Walmarts) and the little spikes that connect hoses. I insert the spikes into the bottom of the bottles, connect a hose piece and have a slow waterer. Twice per week, I fill the containers from my rain barrels and the plants get a nice deep watering. During rainy or stormy periods, I bring the containers back to the potting shed for storage. They will blow away with any wind if empty. After the growing season, the bottles are put in the recycle bins.
