Old, empty plastic medicine bottles

Hi all,

I was wondering if it is feasible and safe to use old and empty plastic medicine bottles, wether they be from prescription or over the counter medications? Why couldn't you peel off all the labels and wash them out real well and use them in your containers as filler instead of a lot of soil which can be heavy at times?

You are re-using an item that some municipalities do not recycle yet and would only end up in the landfill. Just curious if anyone every tried this.

If you have enough of them laying around I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work. From your post I assume you mean adding empty bottles to the bottom of a lager pot to reduce the ammount of soil needed to fill it. I wouldn't even waste time removing labels and washing the containers out.

I use empty med bottles for holding my saved and traded seeds.

I use them for paint colours. I mix my own shades.

I think your idea is a great one. I often fill the bottom of large pots with all kinds of things to take up space. Styrofoam pices from packing, broken up small, work too, as does bubble wrap, what I don't save for seeds. You could put any kind of inert material in there, plastic grocery bags, cookie packages, washed meat trays, etc. etc.

I wouldn't remove the labels or wash them first, either.

I've seen them inverted and used as cane toppers to stop you poking your eye out when you lean over your garden beds. Also on top of canes which are supporting netting over strawberries etc. to stop the canes going through holes in the netting.

flora uk, love your idea! I've come dangerously close to poking my eye out on several occasions. I will certainly employ your idea. Thank you!

i use mine for a) to put my seeds in individually,
b) to soak my seeds in BEFOR planting them!! that way they germinate MUCH faster!! LOL its amazing how good these work intead of them baggies!! and
c)when mailing bulbs, so they don't get all smashed up, i have gotten smashed bulbs, so i thought, hey i have so many of these, why not use em!!! LOL cheaper than sending the box also!! :'))
