| I made a Trellis for my cucumbers and beans for about $8 using PVC and rebar. Here's directions for making a inverted U shaped trellis. If you want a different shape it's pretty easy to adapt. For and inverted U: (my store sells PVC in 10' sections so this is based on that) Buy four 10' sections and have them cut at 6' so that you end up with (4) 6' sections and (4) 4'. Buy four elbow connectors and two straight connectors. Buy four pieces of 4' rebar. Using the straight connectors make two 8' sections of PVC by connecting two 4' sections. Connect the 8' sections on either end to the 6' piece of pipe, using the elbow connectors. You should now have two U shaped PVC pieces. Mark out a rectangle where you want your trellis that is 8' long by however wide you want the trellis. Pound one rebar halfway into the ground at each of the four corners. Slip the PVC sections over the rebar. Hang chicken wire or wire fencing between the two PVC sections for your grapes to grow on. I hung the wire by threading it through the PVC. Try your local freecycle for the materials. Especially the chicken wire/wire fencing, I got mine from a neighbor who was throwing it out. You also might be able to get scrap PVC at a contruction site, just ask the builders. |
