I got the idea here to use toliet paper tubes to start seeds in.
I asked the wife to start saving the tubes instead of throwing them away.
I took about 70 of them and put them in a 15 gallon aquarium, filled with potting soil, put a couple of seeds in each, labeled each with cut up plastic louver blinds, turned on the flouecent light and viola....4 days later I've got a new garden.
Now all I have to do is be patient.
Spring is almost here and my new garden bed is ready to be planted.

| It looks great. A great idea that I came across so frequently. This time I did paper pots using origami method that a fellow gardener posted in this forum. They came out so very well and I just can't wait for spring. happy gardening -Blossom |

Great idea, and your set-up looks great! Are you worried the tubes will disintegrate before it's time to plant them out? |

The roots ought to keep everything together long enough. It's not a long trip to where they'll end up living, so no, I'm not worried at all. |

| Nice. Do the blinds/labels shade the seedlings? You make me want to remove all the paper from my wrapping paper rolls and plant more seeds...since I have no tp cardboard saved. Yet. |

Not at all. The light source is directly over the seedlings. And, as you can see by looking at the cukes, the seedlings quickly grow taller than the labels. |

| Hi, marychrisw! If you haven't saved TP rolls all year, you can use just one to make newspaper cylinders in which to plant seeds. It's very easy. Just cut double pages of newspaper (a folded piece of newspaper) so they'll be as wide as the rolls and wrap the newspaper around the roll to make cylinders. After rolling them, the newspaper cylinders will be several thicknesses deep and surprisingly sturdy. If you want to double the newspaper cylinder thickness, use two sheets of folded newspaper instead of one. Use tape to close the cylinders, and there you are. Some people press a piece of crumpled newspaper into the bottom of the newspaper cylinders before adding the planting soil, if you're worried about the soil falling out at transplant time. It usually doesn't, but it's okay if it does. The roots will hang on to what they've claimed. To use them, make sure you put them in a container that forces them to remain upright close together so they don't sag over, fill them with seed-starting soil, and plant your seed. Water and cover them as you would any seeds you start, but just don't soak them. Some people cut the cylinders in half so they're only half as tall for small seeds -- they're less likely to sag over. A lot depends on the likely length of the new root. When your plants have grown enough to set out, carefully remove the whole newspaper cylinder with the plant in it and set it in the soil. Once you plant them, the newspaper will finish disintegrating. You can remove the piece of tape with which you secured the sides of the cylinder (very easy since the newspaper is damp) or leave it on. Then start saving the TP rolls for next year! |

Happy - Thanks for posting the pics. Great idea for the plant markers - just remembered I have a brand new set of plastic blinds in my closet, a yard-sale find ($2)that turned out to be the wrong size. I will cut them up and use them for my numerous winter-sown seedlings! Yay! |

| Don't forget that you can use the cardboard tubes wrapping paper is in too. It's sturdier than the normal TP rolls too so it will last longer. Or if you have PVC pipe that is thin enough you can cut it and grow the seeds in and pop them out and reuse again and again. |

| It looks like you have them sitting in a rubbermaid container. Are there holes in the bottom of the container for drainage and does the dirt run out when watering? Great setup |

This is set up in a 15 gallon Aquarium. There is no drainage, but none is necessary if you are careful about the amount of water that you add. |
