Somebody gave me these shallow crate thingies yesterday. Four of them. What can I use them for or make out of them? Thanks, geniuses! --Katy

Pound in a couple stakes and then zip tie the mesh crate to them for a sturdy trellis for peas, flowering vines, etc. Plant seed on both sides. Zip tie all four together to make a compost bin. Of course you can do both with other clamping systems :) My daughter just recently sang the praises of building a rabbit cage with zip ties...Hey, if you had two more, you, too, could make a rabbit cage! Interesting to see all 4 are not the same......whatever that means......

They would also be great drying racks for onions and other crops that need air drying to cure. They are a nice size, big enough to hold alot, small enough to move easily, small enough to not be too heavy when filled. Set them on blocks if they are placed on a table....or rig up a system where they can be hung on the wall like a shelf...like Dorisl suggested.

The one with the smaller grid might work for screening large chunks out of compost.

All great ideas! I love the zip ties idea; I just bought a package of zip ties because I love zip ties. I like the idea of a small compost bin; that would be handy. Also, the zip tying them to posts for a sturdy trellis cool, too. Keep the ideas coming! If you happen to think of any.

Well, if you've got lots of eggs to wash, Katy (CityChicken ;o), they'd probably make good washing trays with the addition of some stiff wire handles. Just need a basin large enuf to sink them into for a few minutes. I have been at something of a loss as to what to do with regards to eggs other than try to make sure they don't get dirty in the first place. Probably work great for things that actually come out of the dirt like carrots, beets, and such. Set them up on a stand. Just need the hose for those. Steve

You can use them for Gladiolas or other tall bulb plants to grow thru to keep them from falling over. Just add short legs.

you could also put up (4) 4x4 posts in ground use zip ties to shelve them and add plastic to make yourself a mini greenhouse for starting your seeds & use also as a cold frame for container veggies and or flowers or whatever you like. Suzanne

I just finished recycling two french doors and created an area for flowering vines that I'm planting. I would spray paint them get some copper wire or cheap 16 gauge wire. I put a bunch of nails into a piece of wood and rapped the wire around the nails. It becomes a jig for creating curves etc. You could create a trellis like sculpture with funky wire floral images, wire vines, leaf shapes etc. you could add other found ojects etc. Good Luck!

At least two of them look graduated in size so maybe you could use them to start a worm farm.

I bought something similar and laid them on the ground in my annual flower area. Used the grid as a guide for planting the seeds far enough apart. When the seedlings were up the foilage soon covered the wire grid. Why did I do this? Because the squirrels and bunnies don't like the feel of the wire under their feet so they leave the plants alone. Works for me! trowelgal |

| I love thinking for uses for stuff, You could attach them on a wall so that they are cupped inward like this, ] , then use S hooks to hang your gardening tools. Make outdoor shelves using cinder blocks. Make walls with cinder blocks then layer these with compost, it might allow for easy turning when you need to incorporate air. Maybe you could use one as a frame for a cement project to go in your yard. Paint one, put wheels on it, then use it for under bed storage. | Hang from the kitchen ceiling with four chains. Attach "S" hooks for a pot rack. |
