Cheap tulips and such!

Hi, everyone --

I'm writing in to share a tip: I went to Home Depot to daydream earlier this week, and there were several racks of pots of tulips whose blooms were nearly spent... I assume they're Easter-gift overflow. They wanted $.50 for each pot (3 to 5 bulbs apiece). I'm located in the Chicago burbs, but this sort of sale might be going on in other areas as well.

I also noted plenty of hyacinths and a few damaged Easter lilies. All these poor things need is a little TLC and a good sleep, and they'll be gorgeous again in our yards next spring.

I especially liked getting to see the bloom colors... as many of you know, sometimes the pictures on labels and boxes aren't quite true to what grows!

Good rescue. Might be a little weak the first spring next year, having been forced. If the foliage is strong, the second year the show should be better.

I've bought Tete a Tete daffodils at the end of the season at HD also for .50. Came back this year beautiful, full of blooms. Also got a Barberry shrub for $2.00 because they thought it was done for, little pruning, lots of water it is growing like crazy. Mums can be found cheap at the end of the season too, .75 for small plant last year that is now about 2 foot tall, don't know the color but what the heck. I like surprises.

I bought 4 bags of mixed, single colored tulips & a bag of allium in Jan had them planted by mid Jan...THey have put on a nice show...Wasn't sure how it was going to go for sure, but glad I got them. I know I'll be checking out clearance again...Just when you thought it was over...It's NOT...Indeed 'Cheap tulips and such'!!!

You can find such lovely stuff on clearance... isn't it great? I haven't picked up a dud yet. As PAVeggie mentions, sometimes they need a little time to recuperate from the forcing, but it's certainly worth it.

This is a good time to pick up gladioli, too... they seem to be everywhere, in cheap bags of 25. (And that reminds me of another stroke of good luck: the gladioli I forget about always seem to survive the Chicagoland winters. Bonus!)

Went to Home Despot last night to get some fencing. Saw broken bags of bark chunks piled up at far end of Nursery. Had cashier ask manager "how much for all?" Got all 8 bags for $5.08 (+ tax).
Yay me! [happy dance]
