I was wondering if I could use liquid laudry detergent lids for starting seeds. Has anyone tried this?

Yes, make drainage hole with either a hammer and nail or a drill with a small bit.

I'd say to rinse it well. Kudos to you for EXTREME frugality;)

on another one of my groups it was suggested that these be used for the mini African Violets too :)

Wow...cool. I hadn't thought of that. Off to do laundry now....lol.

I also use these as mini bird feeders on my fence or in a large bush. The birds find them easily and they are easy to place in various areas.

In a pinch I use the lids to hold rubber bands or seeds that I've just harvested

To put holes in any plastic, get a candle, a pair of pliers and an old nail. I have done this time after time and it is easy. Light the candle, and using the pliers to hold the nail, heat up the nail at the peak of the flame. Then push the nail's pointy little end right into the plastic. It will slide right in. Only with really large nails or tough plastic do you have to repeat. This method is superior to drilling holes because it is fast and doesn't crack the plastic. I have made planters from butter tubs, cool whip tubs, cream cheese tubs, etc.

Couldn't you just throw the lid in the washing machine to clean and rinse it real well with no hassle?

heathrjoy, good idea!

Use a soldering (sp?) iron to make the holes easily. Do this outdoors bcause of the fumes.

The new snack pack plastic pringles tubs work well too....add holes the same way as with detergent lids but much easier. Also pringles tubs will stack together for easy storage.

Tip of a hot glue gun might also work
to make holes. I've used it to make holes
in a Rubbermaid container.
