 o
lawns & mowers

I have a lawn mower dilema. We live in the country and have about 1.5 acres to mow. The front lawn is about 1/3+, the back the same, the rest are roads in the back of our 15.5 acres.

Our lawns are not lovely--if it is green and we can mow it, it is grass. Furthermore, we are not enamoured of lawns. My long term goal is to reduce lawn size, but this will take years.

In the meantime, we must do something about the grass, which, in PA where we live, grows prodigiously from April through October. We have let areas of the back yard grow long, mowing them a few times a season with our brush mower. We mowed all the lawns with the brush mower last year because our used riding mower gave out, but that was hard work and looked pretty bad.

I hate putting lots of money into a mower, but, if we don't mow, we end up with a weed meadow. If we leave areas bare, weeds move in fast.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

RE: lawns & mowers

How about if you modify the weed meadow to look more like a flower meadow that would be acceptable as it grows, and compete with the weeds. Plug in some attractive, re-seeding annuals such as borage. Plant flowering cover crops such as purple vetch and crimson clover. Bring in some really vigorous perennials, since you have the room for them. Plant them in clumps to create defined areas, and then mow pathways between your areas.

If it's still in print, I highly recommend a book titled The American Weekend Garden, for ideas.

Thanks for your suggestions, Organica. My library has the book you recommended and I will pick it up today.
