Paint or preserve plastic straps on lawn furniture?

Apparently sun damaged tops of the maroon straps - now black, dull, pitted on top (a curbside find - it's a chaise and I can lie (lay?) on it with my legs/feet in the air against the propped up back ... near nirvana -- until the no-seeums find me). Not getting far with the paints I have on hand. Is there a plastic saver I can buy that will strengthen these pitted straps?

Irma I was having the same problem and I read on one of these forums a thread where a guy just removed the plastic and had some metal pieces welded to the chairs....My chairs were still in great condition except for the bands so I had my neighbor weld some strips on the bottom...a coat of paint and they look fabulous...
