Has anyone tried growing Lotus from the Lotus Root found in the Asian Markets? If so, How to choose the best one to grow (big one or smaller one)? Any tips/advice appreciated. TIA Gloria

RE: Asian Market Lotus Roots

I've tried a couple of times to get them to grow without too much success. I don't know if its common practice at all Asian markets, but at the one near me, they cut the growing points out of the tubers, so this doesn't help. I tried to look for ones with small, side buds that looked like they might sprout.

I think I tried three or four times. I did get one to sprout once, but then it got ignored in the greenhouse in May and dried out and died -- bummer!

It's cheap enough to try, I guess, if you can find a piece that looks like it would work.

Denninmi: Thanks for the speedy reply. Never thought about their cutting the growth points off. I will be going to the local 99 Ranch this week and I'll take a look to see what they have. Would be great to be able to grow one of these for the price!!! Regards, Gloria
