Make-It-Yourself

Hello fellow frugal gardeners,

I have fallen love with a structural support for climbers called an "umbrella tuteur" aka "clematis tuteur". Basically looks like an umbrella frame sitting on top of a pole, so climbers can cascade over the top. I've included the link of one style from a garden catalogue.

Any suggestions on doing-it-yourself, rather than paying top dollar?

Here is a link that might be useful: Kinsman

Yes! I can't believe I do, but I do, lol. If you can rescue a large wire hanging basket(the kind you often see staghorn ferns and such grown on) and an old shepherds' hook with a fanicier bottom(I've seen them, I think I have one that I rescued from a trip to the landfill), I think it would be easy to make a smallish one. The bigger the basket the bigger the umbrella tuteur. A bit of JB Weld would probably do the job just fine, I bet, but it could be soldered or welded if you're handy with that.

I made one with an upside down large tomato cage and rescued tempura-pot racks that I wired to the bent over rounded spikes. It worked just fine and the person I gave it to still has it after a few years.
