frugal peony support ideas -anyone?

Hello all,
I have just acquired my first peony and know that it will need some sort of a support. Not sure what to use that wouldn't cause damage to it in a heavy rain or winds in SW Canada.
Thank you for any suggestions.

I had to google "peony support" to get ideas, but it looks like it would be simple to rig something from found items. A slim, fallen tree branch or large twig for the stake and a modified wire coat hanger or baling wire hoop should be simple and effective and free, I would think.

Good luck! Let us know what you do.

I am including a link to a site that sells supports, as a potential template source.

Here is a link that might be useful: Peony Support

Here's a very simple and cheap one that works for me: a tomato cage with cattle wire placed on top to make a 'cap' - the peonies will grow up thru the 3"x5" cattle wire and hide it. It needs to be done as soon as they emerge in the spring.

When it's time to take the Christmas tree outside, I trim the branches and leave them to mulch the garden. By the time the peonies and other floppy perennials come up the needles have fallen (mulching and fertilizing the garden) and the branches are just where I want them to use as props for floppy plants. Works well, looks natural, recycles something and adds organic matter to the garden. Voila!!

I use 25 cent lamp shades from rummage sales! Take the fabric off and just use the wire frame. RAA

If you know a farmer or anyone that has fencing. Make a knee high circle and put over plants. Keeps them from flopping. Fencing are being taken out so you can get it free just by asking.

We use old hog wire cut about 1 1/2 foot tall and made into a circle cage and then a piece of hose silced on one side put around the top to cushion it and they last for many, many years.

I have about 25 peonies. For years, I have used three stakes and two rings for support. I have found it very frustrating and time consuming to put them together by inserting the rings through the loops in the stakes.

This year, I bought bungee chords (rubber tie downs) and wrapped them around the plants. I think that they work great. For me, it's a perfect solution. So easy and effective.
