Need Ideas for Large Drip Tray

| Hi everyone -
We need ideas on where to get a large drip tray to fit under our Chameleons cage. It needs to be about 2 feet by 2 feet and at least a few inches deep in order to catch the drips from the several times a day mistings and when we water the plants.
I've seen things at pet stores to put under parrot cages, etc., but they seem rather pricey and I felt you guys would have some great ideas.

Try finding someone who makes rabbit cages and they should have the equipment to fabricate a metal bottom pan for you acccording to your specifications. It really is not all that difficult. You can make your own with sheetmetal that is sold for roofing material or flashing material. You need a tool known as a sheet metal brake to make the sharp 90 degree bends to turn up the sides. A brake is a fairly simple tool and you probably can even make that yourself if you are handy. You can also find plastic trays that are made to fit under rabbit cages as well.
Another thought is to make a tray from wood and then waterproof the inside of it with fiberglass (sold in auto parts store and Wal-Mart auto department) or paint the inside with an epoxy 2 part paint that is strong enough to make a pond leakproof.

Home Depot or Lowes also have washing machine pans (those trays that go under washers in case of a leak) that are about the right size and sell for around $20. You could also get a small, plastic kiddie pool for next to nothing at a yard sale if you don't mind the blinding colors.

| Thanks for your ideas everyone. The cement tubs at our Lowes & HD were not large enough. Couldn't find anything big enough at Walmart, Ocean State Job Lots, or Big Lots. Since we are moving soon, we didn't really have too much time to make something. So, we decided to go with the under appliance tray, it's 27 x 30 inches inner diameter. It came with a little plug you can add on to the tray and hook to a hose for easy drainage - we'll hook it up to a 5 gallon bucket. Thanks again!! |
