Pine needle (straw) mulch

Hi everyone: I've been reading about pine straw as a mulch. Can I just gather pine needles from under my trees and use that? Does it change the pH of the soil? I'd like something nice in my "public" areas but don't want to buy those overpriced bags. In my vegetable garden I use newspaper and leaves, but nobody can see that!

Thanks,
Florrie

Yes you can use pine needles from under your tree and yes it changes the pH of the soil. It will make the soil more acidic. If you don't want to amend your soil use the pine needles around acid loving plants like azaleas. Otherwise I would recommend testing your soil at least once a year and adjusting the pH to suit your needs.

Pine needles will not make the soil any more acidic than any other organic matter. You can use them with confidence.
