Bamboo poles

| Ok, this is going to sound really stupid, but I want some bamboo poles to make a tomato trellis, and I can't find them. I've looked at the garden store and at the discount store, but they don't seem to have them. Surely they are somewhere!
Thanks.

Try Pike's. I got some bamboo stakes there...and I think I remember them having taller poles too.

I have seen tall ones at Lowe's. I bought 3 feet ones at a dollar store (Dollar Tree and 4 feet ones at Big Lots.

I got some at Big Lots too, about 6' tall, real cheap.

I get mine from a forest of it that grows a couple of miles from my house. This is the big timber bamboo but the "limbs" are small enough to use for trellises.

Pier 1 Imports has the real big ones in bunches of 3 for around $10.00 and they are about 6 ft. tall. Also have smaller sizes too.

Check out the bamboo forum and you might find someone in your area that grows bamboo. You might get some for free. I'm in South Carolina and there is about 2 acres of bamboo growing right next door to me.

I bought some at K Mart : ) Marsha
There are some big ones at Cost Plus World Market.

I bought one to use for a tree and it's been great since it was varnished; it's holding up in our bad weather well.

Note about pounding nails in bamboo. My bamboo was real dry so you should probably predrill holes in it before pounding in nails. Then be real careful because I smashed some of the ends when the nail went in too far. My power nailer also smashed the ends, so I switched to manual nailing. I made a frame from 1x1" lumber (cut from 2x4s) then nailed horizontal members of bamboo to it.

I got all my 7' bamboo poles from a garden center for about 89 cents each. I use tie straps to tie them together and never have to use nails. A large bag of tie straps is inexpensive and they work like a charm. Laurel

I get my bamboo poles each year by putting an ad in one of those free newspapers. In the ad I offer to remove unwanted bamboo poles from people's land if I can keep the poles. I always get tons of poles for a little bit of labor.

Abby, Where are you located? Can be tough to find or pricey to buy. Post to freecycle or craigslist and you might get some free bamboo (I see posted in Los Angeles area from time to time). I just used my apricot branches this year for teepees. You might want to make tuteur out of wood stakes which are easier to find.

Am I the only one that gets all of mine free by scavenging?!? This is the frugal group, right? I have a lot of bamboo stakes, and let me tell you they aren't growing up here in WI, and I would never buy them. Heck, I have never bought a tomato cage and I have about 50. I also have a lot of those green stakes that pretend to be bamboo but aren't. I find that when people clean their garages in the fall they tend to throw out a lot of gardening supplies. That is probably a northern phenomena, trying to make space in the garage for the car before the snow starts. Marcia
