The Ultimate Recycled Garden

| Everything in this flower bed is recycled.
The plants were grown from seeds collected from my flowers last year, that I grew (in recycled containers) from seeds given to me from individuals who collected from their own flowers that were grown from seeds given to them and so on. All plants are marked using cut-up vinyl blinds.
Newspapers are used as a weed barrier, the mulch is from the city's tree/brush shredding program.
The beds were then lined with bricks gotten from FreeCycle.
Voila - a totally recycled garden.
My only purchase was for the Miracle Gro potting soil, and I will not scrimp on that.

| Bravo! Do you have any pics? We just got our veggie garden ready to plant. Got some farm poo from a friend of ours (how happy those farmers are to give that good stuff away.) Recycled an old dog kennel into a garden fence (gave away the doghouse on Freecycle) A bit of manual labor to turn the soil, add a few birdhouses (That my 11yr old made) and some "garden junk" and beautiful!!!!!!!!! can't wait for a crop! Wished I'd saved some seeds. PLan to do that this year! Jackie |

| It's really nice - but let's go all the way. The real miracle gro is compost - use kitchen waste, weeds, seaweed from beach walks, grass clippings, anything you can get your hands on - shredded newspaper, ask your friends for their yard waste. It's easy and miraculous. Imported plant soil typically consists of peat that is mined, usually in Canada, from peat bogs that will not regenerate for literally thousands of years, which is trucked hundreds or thousands of miles, (and which also exposes you to airborne diseases particular to peat, some of which are fatal), and mined mica which is expanded then trucked to you, and if it's miracle gro it no doubt has other mined substances and chemical fertilizers. This is an enormous drain on the planet. I'm not saying this to make you feel guilty, because that would be unfair & pointless. Besides, I think you're taking admirable action. These are just some factors to take into account in your gardening. The recycling concept is superb, I just would encourage you to take it to the next level - make your soil consistent with the rest of your garden. If you make compost you will have the opportunity to witness real Miracle soil. It's a sacred act. If you want advice you can hop over to the compost forum. It's incredibly easy to do. And your plants will grow miraculously too. All the best to you. |

| Congratulations!! I want to add more encouragement to amend with compost. My garden has been steadily improving for 7 years now, and I don't need to water it as much as before. I have one compost pile split in two sections, and I spread them once in the fall and once in the spring. That's it! No stress, no smell in the compost pile AND the garbage can, no new weeds, and no trips to the garden center to buy plastic bags filled with inferior stuff -yes, Miracle Gro is way inferior to compost. You can do it if I could! |

| Yes the patio is roofing shingles. I made the tables to put my flowers on. I'm going to put the fence around my flower garden. They are all made from skids. |

| Here's my recycled garden. We used the broken cement from our inground swimming pool (that we removed, yuck!). We flipped the cement upside down and stacked it to made the walls. I had some trellis' lying around that I bought at recycling center for a $1. I just had to find a home for the trellis so I built a frame out of recycled wood and put them behind my garden. Even my birdbath is recycled. I traded some plants for the birdbath then had my Dad build me a base for it. He used an old wagon wheel for the base and a metal pipe for the shaft. I really like my recycled gardens and so do the birds! http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc250/Jazzygardener/Fountaingarden.gif
