How do I exterminate ants prior to preparing vegetable bed?

Posted by mlh0920 (My Page) on

I just moved last weekend and the only location suitable for planting veggies is covered in sandy anthills! I'm not sure what kind of ants they are as I've seen all kinds of black and red, both big and small in the yard and on the walkway. I am looking for a FAST and SAFE way to get rid of them prior to planting. I was wondering if disturbing thier nests while I digging up and tilling the soil would be in any way effective???

Fast and safe is to poor boiling water over them. I don't think tilling will do it. It'll just disrupt them for a short while.

do ants eat vegetable plants though? Just build on top of them and they'll move or build around you.

Something my Grandma taught me is to use cucumber peelings to get rid of them and keep them away. I've tried it and it works for me. Just the skin. I used to just walk around outside peeling my cucumbers in the spots where they lurked, I'm sure to my neighbors I looked like a nut!
