A Tip From a Newcomer

I'm new to garden web, but not to gardening.

A couple years ago I asked my DH to pick up plant tags for me and there were none to be found. But he had a terrific idea, ...

Cedar shims from the cabinet department are the best plant tags ever. They are big enough to write clearly on with a Sharpie, last several years, and if you have used both sides and don't need fireplace kindling you could slap some barn paint on them and write on top of that.

It is a great idea. Seems like a natural addition to the garden.

Good one iam3killerbs! I'm making them by splitting off pieces of straight grained framing lumber I got from a neighborhood job site dumpster.

I should have a block of wood underneath.

There we go.

Thats great! I did the same thing this year. I think next year for a more lasting option I'll engrave some river stones with my dremel.

That straight-grained scrap of wood is a terrific find.

My DH coughed up some lengths of random copper pipe and broken tool handles for hose guides, but he jealously guards scrap wood -- lumber being so expensive now.

the local job site dumpsters here are goldmines iam3. I like the broken tool handles and copper pipe for hose guides idea. Tro ut - that would sure be a more permanent way to go

I went to my brothers house the other day to get some "junk" my mom no longer wanted. He does fencing on the side and in his back 40 he has literally PILES of wooden fencing that he took down and considers trash. I was standing there with my mouth hanging open, looking like a kid at Disney land and he's like "what is wrong with you?"
I said in awe and wonder "I'm pretty sure I could make a house with all this wood, if I only knew how!" So, tomorrow I'm headed over there to get my 1st truck-ful to start projects and this is going on my list!!!

Piles of wooden fencing.

If the wood isn't rotten that's such a treasure!
