Some Home Depots not selling broken bags anymore

One thing I always look for when I stop by Home Depot or Lowes is pallets full of ripped open bags of potting soil, mulch, planting mix, ground bark, ground wood, fertilizer, sand, steer manure, etc. that they sell for anywhere from one fourth to one half retail price depending upon mostly who is doing the markdown and how much stuff is missing from the bags and how messy it is. You have to take everything on the pallet whether you want it or not. If you get lucky maybe only about five to ten percent of the bags contents is missing. But yesterday one employee says they aren't doing that anymore and would rather just throw them in the dumpster. I asked why and he said landscapers are coming into the stores and slicing open the bags and coming back later looking to buy the stuff cheap. It seems not all Home Depots are doing this though, I hope it doesn't catch on as for someone on a limited gardening budget it was a chance to get this stuff cheap.

Same here in NE FL. And I ran into the same situation at the local Garden Ridge store. And they arrest you if you get caught dumpster diving. Then, everyone gripes about our overflowing landfills. DUH!!!

I know a landscaper in my area who has torn open bags at Lowes/HD, to only send his crew person later and buy the stuff cheaper. He also steals sod and takes more than what he paid for. Word is getting around that this guy is a hothead and that he cannot not be trusted. I would hope that most landscapers have more honesty about themselves, and the dishonest ones are the minority. A couple of landscapers have been caught stealing newly planted trees from the local park where community members have raised funds for the trees. Oh, and they're also illegally dumping in the park, too. What next...?
At least we can count on HD/Lowes for markdown plants!
ps maybe can you go to your municipality and get free mulch and compost; also, someone is always giving away horse manure, although it has to be composted before use. Go to your local coffee shop and usually they will be happy to give you unlimited spent coffee grounds for your soil amendment.

I was just at a Menards and couldn't find the usual skid of broken bags that they had been putting out for 25% off.

One problem with that is every time I take a few bags to the check out, they can't properly ring them up and have to get a supervisor or head cashier over to verify the sale. I have inquired as to why they can't have a category for this if they put it out with a sign 25% OFF right on the skid. No practical response to that. I have gotten a lot of rocks, mulch, and potting soil like this and thought I was doing them a favor by hauling bags that spill their contents loading and unloading in a vehicle. Guess not.

Now I noticed there was no clearance area and they had a huge bin that looks like they are dumping in the broken bags. Maybe they are making their own compost? I will have to find someone with a brain there and see what is up with that bin.
