What can be done with a washing machine tub?

Posted by hannahholly 8bTX (My Page) on

I have had a washing machine tub--the inside metal tub that holds clothes while washing---for several years in the storage shed. I always intended to do something with it but never have. I figured it was large, metal, full of holes, so it ought to be good for something. Now however, I am going thru all my possessions and ridding myself of junk I will never use. I am not quite sure if I should keep the tub or set it out for heavy trash day.

Does anyone have suggestions?

Since I only do container gardening these days, I would fill the bottom with something light, like packing peanuts. Then fill the rest with potting soil and plant something in it. It already has the drainage holes!

I have a dryer drum that I painted white on the outside and planted in just the way that I described. No pictures, because I only have vegetables in it, so never bothered taking pictures last year. This year they aren't up yet.

Worm bin? Now that might work.

On the worm bins, they don't recommend metal bins as it reacts somehow. Plastic or wood...

Some friends have one propped up on stones (in their back yard) which they use as a fire box. Works pretty well, and the fire is safely contained so you can sit near it, visit and stay warm.

If the holes are big enough, use as an herb jar. Paint it a pretty color, fill with dirt. Have different herbs growing from the side holes & something colorful on top. The linked photo shows a standard ceramic herb jar -- and a lot of information about growing herbs.

Someone over the soil, mulch and compost forum was suggesting a washing machine tub would be great for a compost sifter . I am not sure if that thread is still there.

I have had plants in one for years...put a pipe through the center hole for vines to grow up and have cascaders around the edge...no one would guess what it is. (Wish I could get more, but now days they are all plastic.) The fire pit sounds great.

Set it up on a tire rim and it will look like a large vase!

Well,

If it's big enough, you could put your kid in it (or yourself) and roll down a hill. I did that one winter day when I was a teen and it was awesome!
