Composter and other

Well,
I was reading through yesterday (I'm new on gardenweb) and found some neat ideas. But I couldn't think of anything that I was doing in particular. Then, this afternoon I was sitting in the back yard watching my patchy lawn grow and realized that I'm a queen of reuse (not refuse!). My fence on one side is made of bent metal poles from someone's garbage. They are about 1/4" in diameter and 1m long and bent into U shape. I overlapped them along the edge and they actually look fine.

I made a composter out of 4 old pallets (that bricks or insulation or whatever) come on. It's great! there's slots for air to circulate, I used a bungee cord to hold the 4th side in place, but make it easily removeable for turning. The lid is made out of the sides of an old crib (that the tenants downstairs left lying against the fence for 4 months and I finally decided that they had ditched it. On top of that is a piece of old carpet to keep the moisture in(in the summer) and the snow out (in the winter).

I found a 10' piece of green chainlink fence in someone's garden last week. It's now tacked to the wooden fence for the sweet peas to climb.

I'm using a piece of concrete that I just broke up for a barrier to keep soil from eroding into the back alley.

Gardening aside, I'm going to make a dog house with an old fence that I have to take down. I found an old door in the alley that I'll use for the floor and roof.

Can't think of much else right now. But I'm sure there are others.

Keep the ideas flowing!

I picked up two parts of a futon frame from the roadside trash one day and am going to use them as trellises. I'm looking for two more pallets to finish my compost pile.

I was bringing home old soil from the garden center where I worked. It was the soil from the plants we tossed away. I just use boiling water to sterilize it, mix it with some cheap manure, and VOILA! Great soil for potted plants, especially veggies.

Ha I have made outdoor bookcases/shelving out of those old pallets. They are still being used after many years. No paint or any such I just have 'em on the porch and they are fine. Strong too ;o) Nice instant rustic look. HA!!

My potting bench is two upside down trash cans with a board across them. Not too beautiful, but it works.

I used pallets to make a compost bin; more pallets to make a "white picket fence" for around my vegetable garden (found chicken wire for the inside to keep the rabbits out); old bricks to make borders along the flower beds; plastic coated wire (10' lengths) to make trellis' for my vines; old metal drum with lid to store "dry" materials for the compost pile; construction wire to make tomatoe cages; discarded hangers to make plant supports; discarded plants from a local greenhouse (which I planted and they are doing fine) for the 4 1/2" pots; discarded countertop, with sink to use as a potting bench in my garage - placed on two discarded base kitchen cabinets; two bicycle rims and a galvanized pole made into a vine "tower", and six discarded windows made into a cold frame.
