Nutting idea for edging, need feedback

I posted this on Garden Junk, but then realized that this is probably the right place:
Hello there,
I was looking at the coconut fiber and rubber garden edging strips that you can run your lawnmower on in a catalog and thinking how practical they are but not wanting to pay the price (of course.) Then I realized that the stuff is really a lot like a rug or carpet strip. I actually put some old rugs on part of the veggie garden so we could empty our garage out for rebuilding onto that spot under a canopy tent. Still haven't done the new garage, but the carpet keeps the weeds away.
Would it be crazy to cut strips of carpet remnant or even a rubber rug for boots, if one can be found that has the right look and use it for edging?
I'm having a hard time imagining the right look but who knows when I might just find it! |

| Asphalt shingles work well too, but they have to be pinned down to the soil with those metal U-shaped pins. You can make your own pins from wire coat hangers. I got my shingles from the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store for $4. Cut them lengthwise into strips and overlap the ends slightly, using one pin at each junction. They lay nice and flat, get really hot in the sun and bake anything that tries to grow under them and are easy to walk, mow and trim around. |

| Thanks thats a great idea. I want something greay to match the concrete castle pieces I want to put on the garden side. |

I used the roofing shingle strips to ring a stone walled bed that always had to be weed whacked, not any more! Looks very tidy and the mower goes right over it. Also used the landscape pins cut from wire hangers. Love to recycle, reuse, save money! Tina |
