Watering with 2-liter bottles?

Posted by tater1112 z4 MN (My Page) on

I know I've read about using inverted soda bottles to water the garden - burying them part way, cutting the bottoms off, and poking holes in the lids to let the water run out (not in that order, of course).

My question is this: How large should the holes in the lid be?

I'm hoping that this will make it easier for my boyfriend to tend the garden while I'm gone next week. :)

I would say not larger than 1/8". In order to not keep having to fill them, the smaller the better. See my post on frugal watering system further down the page.
Good luck,

Well, after a little more research this morning, I found some more information. If anyone else is interested, one suggested a hot nail to poke holes in the lid, and another suggested a small drill bit, but didn't specify size.

I think I'm going to try the nail, since I would have to borrow drill bits from a friend.

Here is a link that might be useful: One site with directions

I thought I saw something on this forum about watering along the lines of what you've mentioned. The person takes a 5-7 gallon plastic bucket. Drills a hole in the side. Into the hole goes one end of some vinyl tubing. The other end is placed by the plant that is to be watered. The top of the bucket is covered to keep out things that could clog up the tubing. I found a couple 5 gallon buckets the day after I read the post. I then popped over to the local hardware store and picked up some 3/16 OD 1/8 ID vinyl tubing - the smallest they had. I'll be experimenting next week with the watering device on a couple of watermelon plants. In the past, I tried the 2 liter method by burying the bottle right next to the plant. Screwed up in that the hole I put in the bottle was too big and the water was all gone within a couple hours. The bucket and tube method does bear some promise however.

That was my post about the bucket & tubing. It works great. The heading was "Frugal Watering System & Tomato Cages".
