Soda bottle waterers

This may be wrong place for this but . . . if I use one of these waterers for a plant in the ground will it just suck up all the water immediately or will the plant just take what it needs? Are these best for potted plants or can they be used for plants in the ground too?
Thanks,

Kim

RE: Soda bottle waterers

I did some of the 2 liter bottles yesterday - put them in some of my bigger potted plants, a few potted trees (pendng planting this fall). Works great - poked 2-3 holes around the top - it slowly dripped in around the roots.

Here in AL - in my neck of the woods - we have had NO rain - so i am doing all i can to conserve water (save my water bill!) and at the same time keep the plants alive...
