seed starting

| Hi everyone, I love this forum. I tried starting seeds in one of those fast-food containers with clear lids. I did the toilet paper roll thing. I put crumbled newspaper in the bottom, then the seed, and soil on top. Then I watered it. It was airtight. I waited about 5 weeks, added a bit of water,as it became necessary, and nothing. The smell became unbearable and I ended up tossing the whole thing. I am very new at this,so I just used some cheap store bought seeds. What did I do wrong? I really wanted it to work. Any help would be appreciated as I really want to learn how to do this. Thanks |

| It sounds like they started to rot. You need to make sure it's not air tight; while you don't want all the water to evaporate you need to get fresh air in there to keep things from stagnating. And I would think you'd need soil underneath the seeds, for the roots to grow down into. Check out the winter-sowing forum. Even if you're spring- or summer-sowing, they have lots of great ideas on how to sow seeds in all sorts of containers. And don't give up; some of my nicest plants came from cheap dimestore packs of seeds! |
