Love trash day!

Out walking yesterday a.m. (6 a.m. to avoid the heat) with DH, saw a stack of pavers sitting beside someone's trash cans. Screeching to a halt to take a look, my husband rolls his eyes and says "do you want me to go home & get the car?" Of course! So home we march, get the minivan and drive back to see the homeowner coming out to the driveway.

"Do you want more?" he says "we just tore apart our patio and I have LOTS MORE in the back - just help yourself and close the gate behind you!" So he goes off to the gym and we get our weight-lifting exercise by hauling tons of pavers over and into the van, home to unload them, and now my husband's just waiting for a cool day to start on the paths I had planned in back & front!!!

Woo Hoo!!

RE: Love trash day!

Wow! I had a friend take up a patio once and give me a lot of blocks, then she gave me a whole stack of bricks that the city took out of her drive when they had to repair the water line. Nothing like expensive stuff for free!

I love trash days too! We get to pick from three companies and so it's all week in my neighborhood in Southern California.

I just picked up a shutter that I'll probably paint and hang some plants on.

I came home two days ago with plastic nursery pots, a redwood tree stake and two spent bamboo tikis.

I have used the split bamboo parts of tiki to bend on top of a strawberry pot to make a little trellis.

Several months ago I got two good quality watering hoses that just needed a patch and a new connector.

I got a bunch of nicely weathered picket fences that I now have my grapes trellised on.

And these are just the garden-related finds.

It's amazing what people intend on throwing out. I usually donate to thrift store, use freecycle.com or craigslist or just put on curb with free sign.

I also came home last week with a perfectly fine brand new bird cage with all the goodies. Just needed to be cleaned.
