garden bench from free materials?

We want a comfortable garden bench for our front yard. However, we want to make it out of free (or inexpensive) materials, preferable natural (no plastic, etc.). It's a bonus if it's a bit ugly or rustic so that it doesn't appeal to your average sticky-fingered passer-by. Something fairly permanant would be ok, too. I found one plan that calls for rocks held together with mortar and then an old plank added to the top... that has potential. Any other ideas out there? Can't wait to see what you all come up with! :) Thanks!

Carol, You should go visit the Garden Web Garden Junk forum and search for garden benches. There are a variety of made benches from stumps, headboards, scrap wood, pallets, block, and even a sod bench somewhere. Ask your question there and you will get many many many suggestions and pics too.

RE: more info about benches

Another place to try would be Garden Web sister site That Home Site and the Trash to Treasure forum.

One of my favorite hobbies is restoring old benches. I get most of mine at flea markets or yard sales. Sometime I ask my town hall for old benches that they are throwing out. They usually give me them for free.
