Glass blocks

I have approximately 50 glass blocks. Know what I mean they are maybe eight inches by eight square and perhaps three inches thick.

I got them free and just love having them

I am doing over my gardens at a new to me, home

Thinking of how best to use these

I wondered if I could make a glass wall about four foot high and put lights behind it or in it or some such thing and have water flowing over the blocks into some sort of pond

My son said that he had seen in Victoria British Columbia this summer a walk way from one pond to another, (not really for walking on) but rather to give the impression of a river he said and this was illuminated from underneath

Has anyone seen any such uses of these glass blocks

I live in Canada, so winter weather is an issue Zone 4 is quite cold and lots of snow here

I am in Florida winters so never see it all.

The snow that is

RE: Glass blocks

In 1976 my DH was closing a store in a mall. Inside a concrete walk were glass blocks cemented together. I think there were 6 in each spot. I remember seeing light through them, so I assume they were wired for light.

Of course all those "old Fashioned" block were thrown away. I remember at the time wanting them. But because it might look like he stold them we could not take any.

I think I would put the blocks toward the outside to encourage people to walk in the center.

I recently read in a gardening magazine that someone used glass blocks to line a raise bed. Added benefit was that they absorbed and retained heat and plantings sprouted sooner! I'd love to find a bunch of glass block!

Search HGTV site. I saw them do a show recently doing just what you suggest.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments on my glass blocks

I haven`t done anything more about it. Not about this particular project but have been working on finishing off two other projects.

Who knows how long we have up here in Canada before the colder weather comes along

But am going to look at HGTV I wish they had more garden programs on television nowadays

and lining small beds with the blocks is an idea I had not thought of that might be a good idea

I am just concerned about the blocks being in the ground in winter. They are sealed though So maybe it is no problem at all

Thanks all

Diane

That sounds SO cool! I'd use them for my Square Foot Garden, no doubt!

You can put lights in them within a wall. All it takes is a glass drill bit. make sure you seal the hole with caulk. Ydda out.

They turn up in used building supply places from time to time. I have seen them there brand new as well for 1/4 of the retail price. I have even seen them at goodwill in small numbers.

I too found some free glass blocks :) I used them to make a kidney shaped raised bed one block high. The sunlight hits the blocks...sigh. Especially nice in winter here (a good 6 mo/yr) with snow on top of the bed, like a fairy mound when the light shines on the blocks and coruscates.

Menards has them for four bucks each.

RE: Glass blocks

What a price for glass blocks

Now we do not have Menards in Canada, but,
I am driving down to my house in Florida next week
Will take a look for this chain. Seems it is sort of like a Home Depot I drive some of the way down on 75 and notice there are stores along this route

It sure is a great price for glass block

I almost have my glass block in place. Had the local handyman help me and he just put them down today in a sort of frame that he made

He took all the materials home with him and brought them back and put in place today but I was not home til night time so have not had a chance to see how it is.

To bad it is so late in the year, here in Canada I will be away next week for five months and for much of that time they will be buried under snow

Is the test for them and Johns handwork to see how they come through winter. In Cqanada and snow

Might get a number of them at Menards if are available for this price and similar quality Just can't believe the price in the stores here they are about twenty dollars a piece

RE: Glass blocks

Diane, I'd love to know how your handyman framed these. Possibility of a picture or two?? How are they being used?

Keep the ideas coming, everyone. And thanks.
