Frugal uses for used canning lids

| There is a thread on the Harvest forum discussing the fact that you cannot re-use canning lids for canning. Does anyone have any ideas for recycling the canning lids? What else could they be used for? I hate throwing them away after I open a jar. |

| My son's teacher had the kids make Christmas tree ornaments out of them. Paint, Glitter, Felt, Paper glued to them and a nail hole with a ribbon through it and....Voila! Their Cub Scout leader had them make punched designs using a hammer, nail and block of wood. Then sprayed the lids silver so they looked like punched tin. Hang it in your window or make several and make a mobile/chime. Cute way to teach a skill (how NOT to hit your fingers with the hammer!) and a little history too! Can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with. ~~Mimi~~ |

| hang them on strings in the garden to keep birds and deer away (maybe). |

I have painted them white(last year) and painted a snowman face(side view) on them for ornaments. They were really cute but I can't remember the link. Just put in snowman canning lids in the search engine, they should come up somewhere. This year I am going to have my daughter paint them and then put one of her sticker pictures(we bought from the school) in the middle and glue lace around the edge so she can give these away for presents at Christmas. | That reminds me..... my son's preschool present to mom was a canning lid w/lace around it and his school pic inside. Add a ribbon for hanging. Maybe more personal than stickers. wildrose |

| I made many Christmas ornaments with the school picture in the center in elementary school. Sometimes with a glued on macaroni border. These days I just mark the used lids with a permanent marker so I don't try to use them for the next year's canning, and then use them with the jars to store leftovers in the refrigerator or dry goods. |

Well if lids are not dented or rubber is not ruined, I wash and reuse. Nail them to stick, paint as wanted and use a garden markers. |

| If they are still in good shape, after washing I reuse mine with a vaccuum sealer with the mason jar sealer attachment. I make my own bread mixes, pudding mixes, etc., and seal them up in the jars with cooking instructions. These stock my pantry for those busy times when there isn't time to cook. Much cheaper and more wholesome than store-bought. Just google on "homemade mixes" and you'll bring up a mountain of websites that have recipes. |

| String them together and make "chain mail" for the kids for Halloween. Overlap them by about 25%-50% and it should look neat. (Chain mail is a type of armor made of interlocking links of wire loops. You could call it chain mail since the lids are round, even though they are not hollow rings.) |
