Permanent marker for terra cotta pots?

OK, here's the idea I need help with:
For plant markers...I help with a couple of local festivals and pick up the little flags (orange plastic on an 18" wire), have a bunch; bought a dozen of the little 1" clay pots at hollybolly and what is labeled an "opaque paint marker". I marked the small pots w plant name/date, slid the wire through the hole then bent the wire over so the little pot dangles like a bell. It whould look really nice if I had any calligraphy skills but I like it even with my chicken scratching.

My questions: Will this 'paint marker' fade over the winter (guess I'll know next spring)? Is there something better I could/should be using? How about spraying the potlets with a clear matte finish or something to make it last longer?
I'll appreciate hearing from you creative folks who have done so many things....or also if there is a better forum I should try posting on.

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas and insights I've gained on this forum,
Will

Hello Will:

So if I am reading your post right, the part of the flag you want to write on is plastic? If so, it may 'smear' off, I would test one and see. What kind of weather do you get where you live? If it gets as cold as it can get here... 40 below, the plastic may actually freeze and it is possible it might break.

Try it with the pen you bought, perhaps if you changed markers it would have lasting power (?)

I like the Sharpie "Rub a Dub" Laundry markers - the marking lasts along time even outside.

Grease pencil doesn't come off and they make a white one for marking tile. DH uses one to mark his tires, I try to remember to use mine to mark plant pots when I stick cuttings(don't ask me how faithful I am about using it, though).
