RE: growing a date tree?

Twelve years ago, I planted 3 date seeds from a store-bought package of dates (unknown variety). They are about 6 feet from the edge of a small lake, and about 3 feet above the waetr level. Two of the seeds sprouted, luckily a male and a female. There have been dates for the last three years, but only the first crop matured completely (I have two seedlings from that crop). This year's crop is the largest (200-250 fruits), but did not mature since the cold weather came early. The trees have an abundance of offshoots, and have survived a cold spell of 12F (-11C). The female tree is now about two story-tall.

Bravo Freddys! What a success story!
Your trees need to have a talk with my tree: we have planted it 4-5 years ago, replanted it several times, and it is still up to me knee...
Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

RE: RE: growing a date tree?

I live next to a town that has a Date Festival each year. There are Date orchards everywhere.

On Hwy 111 in the town of Indio, CA there is a store called Shields Date Farm. They have a movie (It's a crack up to watch..so old and all in black and white and shown in a very cute and old makeshift theater), and they draw people to their store because they advertise it thus: "The Romance and Sex Life of the Date."

Until we watched that movie, we had no clue! Here is the deal. They hand pollinate all of their date trees. They take a male bloom and rub it all over the female blooms. They hang permanent ladders on every tree, and they strip the thorns (and they are mighty) off the branches. You drive by the orchards and see all these bags over the dates. I thought the bags were to keep the birds away. Not so! Rain protection!

Hope this little "diddy" about "Jack and Dianne" gave you date growers some ideas!
