Check with local tree trimming companies, I've got a free load on the way today--They need a place to dump their chipped branches.

Tree trimming companies are very good at giving the chipped up stuff away but you have to be very careful that it is not loaded with evasives! I know a few folk (northern transplants) here in FL that had no idea what a Brazilian Pepper tree was. They got FREE mulch from a tree company that was loaded with B P trees and seeds. It has been many years and they are still digging out the *%#@ things. They sprout like weeds constantly even after multiple treatments of growth inhibitors. Several choking vines are also tossed right in the shredder since they grow right on the trees.

The Brazilian Pepper and termites are two reasons I won't take free mulch from tree companies or the power company, which gives it away too. I do wish I could have gotten some of that mulch that was piling up from the tree removal after hurricane Charley. Most of those were healthy trees.

I'm so lucky not to live down south. The worst thing we have to worry about around here is chipped poison ivy!

Gotta love the tree trimmers. They recently came through our town and pruned all the trees along the main road. They dumped all their trimmings in one spot just outside of town. I think just about everyone in town has been out taking away mulch for their gardens. I've used a few tons myself at my house.

I've used free mulch from tree companies for the past three years with no problems. I use one or two companies who live near me...they are small enough that the owner knows what's in the mulch. He won't knowingly deliver bad stuff - termite trees, Poison Ivy, etc. He looks out for me. So far , so good. ~Alex
