What can I grow in wide glass vases?

| I've been growing AVs in small glass vases for a while, but I'll soon be moving them into actual pots and soil. But I'm wondering, what can I grow in these glass vases (I have the kind of household where if something's not in use, it gets broken :( ) They're about 6" tall and 5" wide at the mouth (althouth they taper to 4" an inch below the lip and then open back up to 6" wide at their widest and then taper to a bottom width of 4")---so they're curvy, but they have room :)
I can't bring myself to just throw these vases out, but I'm looking for inexpensive plants that will thrive in them.
Oh, environmentally the house is very dry and there are really only 2 exposures--SW (which gets really hot) and NE. And I have a really unfortunate knack for killing succulants.
Any suggestions?
Thanks! |

How about making them into small bog gardens? There are several kinds of bog plants that don't mind full sun and stay small - certain species of pitcher plants and sedges come to mind. I started some bog gardens this past spring and was very happy at how low maintenance and attractive they were. I grew one sedge in a broken champagne flute. Barb |

| you could also put pebbles in the bottom and a little water and grow bulbs in them. You only want the roots in the water not the bulbs. |

Hi Cups, I'm not sure if you are specifically interested in your vases, but a really fun thing (and of course, cheap) is sweet potatoes. I had some that I intended to cook for Thanksgiving but didn't get to it, so i put them in a jar (Barilla pasta sauce, i think). Now it is rooting & sprouting, and will grow a really nice vine for a few months before it is completely spent. If you use the vases as you described, the sweet potato idea would still work, you would just need to put toothpicks in the sides to keep the potato from falling in the water. Just an idea... | pothos because you can ignore it, let all the water dry out and it still thrives! Coleus because 2 days after you put in a cutting, it grows! Spath lilly because it looks so good in glass! |
