Pomme Gris and Belle de Pontoise are very different apples so it should be obvious from the looks. Pommel Gris is small and fully russeted, and with a coconut texture to the sweet flesh. Belle de Pontoise is a large apple often with little russet on it and with a savory flavor. Both are very good apples, but are very different. My guess is the apple is Belle de Pontoise since Gris is a very common word in French apple names, its the equivalent of "russet" and is often added to variety names as a descriptive or for a more russeted sport (e.g. Reinette du Canada vs Reinette Gris du Canada).

Thanks Scott, you are both an font of apple info and very generous with it. That's super helpful. How are the two apples for disease resistance, in your experience?

I have several years of experience with Pomme Gris and it does really well, I get nearly blemish-free fruits in spite of little spraying for summer diseases. The only downside of it is the fruits are on the small side and they don't keep all that long (more precisely they keep well but they soften). Belle de Pontoise I have less experience fruiting but its at least reasonable as far as diseases on the fruit. I don't remember significant fireblight issues on either of them.
