I am thinking about purchasing a large number of carmine jewel cherries after researching them. They appear to be very disease resistant, but I am wondering how that would hold up here in humid and wet upstate NY. Does anyone have experience growing these in a similar climate? Also, do you know about how sensitive the blossoms are to spring frosts? Thank You

From my research i would guess that they would do very well. There is actually a nursery that sells them in ny, cant remember what it is called. This is their retirement year...

I grow Romeo, Juliet, and Crimson Passion (all from the same series as Carmine Jewel). They will be 3 years old this spring and I'm hoping for my first blossom/fruiting this year. The growth has been 2-3' per year, they are an attractive looking symmetrical bush. I'm growing them in a pretty similar climate as you would be (humid/USDA zone 4b here). So far there has been no disease, pest, or weather related issues at all, they seem bullet proof, but maybe time will tell more.

The ones I grow here in Kansas do get leaf spot if I get behind on my fungicide spray. They are very hardy and taste excellent. The yields are good. I have one row with 6' spacing between plants. The weather is different there yet I can tell you they survive weather extremes here very well. It can get very cold , very hot, very dry, or very wet. They came through it all even the hoards of grasshoppers and rabbits. You are making a wise choice in cherries. The fruit is on the smaller side like any sour cherry. The flesh to pit ratio is excellent because the seed is so small. Where do you plan to make your order and how many will you buy? We may have suggestions to save money etc.

Hopefully, the new pest, spotted-winged drosophila fruit fly, won't become an issue with them. I also have planted quite a few carmine jewels and have ordered some romeos and crimson passions this year. Northwoodswis
