pop-up advertisements

Is it just my computer...or are we being invaded by GardenWeb commercialism??? I continuously get hit when scrolling up, scrolling down, and changing pages. The pop-ups just continue. This is fairly new to me...maybe this last week. I really do not want to forget this site....

There was another recent post about this same issue. At the time, I wasn't having a problem as long as I didn't place my cursor over any highlighted text. Now, however, those ads are popping up no matter what. I guess the ads at the top of the page, at the bottom, and the entire right side bar weren't enough.

My browser (Safari) has an option that can be set in preferences that blocks popups. It worked well for me on GW, but due to some issues on other sites, I got Ad-block like Mrs. G, and I no longer see any ads on this site.

After you setup the Adblock extension you need to restart your browser or at least refresh the window for the ads to go away.

Yeah...me too...getting old quick. I wonder...if we all ad-block them, does the host still get paid?

I understand Gardenweb's need to make a profit, but geesh...this is just too much.

You folks with this problem have an adware bug in your computer. you need to download malwarebytes and run it. Malwarebytes comes with a free 14 day full service trial period then a basic service for free indefinitely. If you have Norton or McAfee you may think you are covered, but they aren't perfect. Also malwarebytes does not conflict with Norton and etc.

Even if you don't have a problem it is good to have malwarebytes installed and on standby

I have Adblock and malwarebytes. I needed them both to solve the pop up ads and unwanted website problems. That's as well as Norton & McAfee.

Thanks fireduck for bringing this extremely annoying problem up and for Bradybb providing the Adblock link. The pop-up ads on this site are completely out of hand!!!!

thanks for the nice words...I don't want to be a troublemaker...but this new pop-up aggravation is kind of over-the-top. Unfortunately, many seniors that visit these gardening sites are not on the cutting edge of technology. Therefor, making the site work without being totally frustrating is a real challenge. Thanks to all for the suggestions/ideas.

I tried to do the honorable thing and write (contact us) GardenWeb about my concerns for the invasive pop-ups....in part, here is what I got as a reply from Garden Web:

That wasn't much of an answer about your concerns, fireduck. In fact it looks to be a cut and paste.I found the same thing on a Houzz support page.
Well, who knows?Possibly this union will make for a better site.Maybe Houzz knows. Brady

It sure is a pleasure using this forum now without those out of control pop ups. I don't think GW has a clue that the pop-ups almost ruin coming here.
Thanks again for the heads up.

It was nice not having the multiple extremely annoying pop ups for a day but somehow GW got around the blocks and disable the opt outs options at the bottom of the page. About done with this site.
