KGB Cherry Training System

I know what everyone says: you can't grow cherries on the humid east coast. Well, I've done my research and I still have that cherry itch, so I went ahead and put in an order for an Attika and Emperor Francis cherry with Van Well Nursery and a Sandra Rose from Fowler. The Sandra Rose is going to be on a Gisela rootstock while the Attika and Emperor Francis are on Mazzard. So here here's the question: has anyone ever pruned cherries according to the KGB system, especially with a mazzard root stock?

I have seen very little written about the kgb system on the forums and was wondering if anyone has had any success with it. Please also comment on the Cherry varieties I chose for my uppoer south location. I tried to pick ones which would be the most crack resistant, though I know that is just one of the many challenges to growing cherries on the east coast (I lost my first cherry to canker).

I was trying the system, but my tree got canker too. I may try again this spring. You can use mazzard, you do have to modify pruning a little. You need more branches with mazzard, 30 instead of 20. new trees require 2 heading cuts, on mazzard three is better to establish more branching. I guess multiple branches help to moderate the growth and control the tree vigor.

This is a great system for Gisela rootstocks. Trees will be 8 feet tall at best and out produce any other system after about 5 years.
