Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I did a search of this forum and didn't find an answer to my question. For those who trellis apple trees, what rootstocks do you use? I've read that Bud 9 or similar is good for this type of production, but does anyone use either EMLA26, EMLA7, or other semi-dwarfing?
I've read information by Cornell University and a Canadian Agriculture publication, which recommends a dwarf tree similar in size to M9 for tall spindle production, with trellis height of 9 to 10 feet. However, I toured an apple orchard a few years ago (I don't remember the name) and believe the owner was using EMLA7 and EMLA26. His trellis height was taller than 10 feet, more like 12-13 feet.
If using a slightly taller tree, could I just prune the trees to the height of my trellis? Thanks for any insight.
