Transplanting American Persimmon Suckers

Has any successfully transplanted any american persimmon sucker trees while dormant? These are suckers growing off one big interconnected root system.

I recently pulled up a bunch of these trees on a sand bank where they easily came out of the ground with about 2-3 ft of root on 2-4 ft trees. I cut the tree down to around 1-3ft tall and sealed the top with wax. I have them in large containers with damp sand covering the roots.

The question is will these take off in the spring when planted and will 2-3 ft of roots be enough to support trees this size?

I plan on grafting these after they get established.

Has anyone successfully propagated root cuttings of american persimmon?

I have not tried, but given the difficulty I've had with a bare root persimmon, and anecdotal evidence from this and other forums, I'd bet they are difficult to establish.

To hedge your bets, I'd plant a couple persimmon seeds by each sucker you transplant. I bet the seedlings surpass the transplants in two seasons.

palazzo, it sounds like the suckers you dug up have as good a chance as any, so you might do okay, but my experience with less favorable attempts were failures. Any more I avoid transplanting or dealing with bare root trees by trying to start from seed or graft onto wild seedlings/suckers where they are.
