covering trees in winter

I might just be nervous. It seems like covering some of my trees did more damage than if I had left uncovered. I am just talking about tender trees such as pomegranate and all citrus. I still cover my figs for the first 3 or 4 years after that they seem to do alright. Any thoughts on this subject would be much appreciated.

Covering for freeze protection doesn't help much unless you provide a heat source or there is good ground heat combined with an insulated covering. Just draping plastic over plants doesn't help.
